Philosophy

Our visual language is deferential to the abundance that surrounds, and the changing of the seasons — made possible with support from the resilient network of growers, foragers, suppliers, and craftspeople we call friends. Astute students of flowers will notice the influences of Constance Spry and Sofu Teshigahara in our work– Spry for her effusive use of overlooked materials, and Teshigahara for his reinvention of form, time and time again. Both held that flowers should be for everyone– a belief we maintain as well.

The mondine were women who cultivated rice in Northern Italy in the late nineteenth century. Mothers and daughters would leave their homes in the summer months to perform the back-breaking work of picking weeds in the transformation of these rice fields. They were known for their fierce determination, their triumphant spirit, and their song. We sought inspiration from these strong women in defining our studio’s ethos.

Ikebana Unbound

At its heart, the Japanese art of ikebana is about celebrating an intimate connection with nature. To practice ikebana is to find inspiration in the seasons, favor unassuming blooms and branches, seek balance and simplicity, and remain fully present in the moment. It’s with tremendous pride that we share our first book, Ikebana Unbound, which features 32 projects in the freestyle or Jiyuka form—the most flexible ikebana style, readily adaptable to modern spaces and contexts. Published September 2020 by Artisan Books.

“A modern take on a centuries-old art that’s breathtakingly simple.”
— Booklist
